Keeping Positive On Your TExES Exam
-- Avoid the TExES Exam Doomsayers

Everyone knows that a positive attitude is better than a negative one when heading into a high stakes test. It might not make much difference on how much you know, but it sure feels a lot better to be upbeat than it does to expect failure. The TExES series of teacher certification exams has a reputation for being tough. Don't let the "word on the street" get in the way of developing a winning attitude. A positive mental approach can only lead to a better score.

Yes the TExES exam is a challenge--no matter the subject area. Everyone knows that. It's the same for everyone. Period. Done. Time to move on. You need every aspect of test taking strategy working for you--not against you--when the test date arrives.

It was several years ago when I was milling about in the hallway of a large high school on a Saturday along with several hundred other

people. We were all there for the same purpose--it was teacher certification testing day. Those of us who were there for the math test tended to find each other and hang out together. I noticed two distinct personality types in action. One group was hovering around a guy who had obviously done this before. He was complaining about how many times he had already failed the test, how unfair the test was, how unrealistically high the passing score was, blah, blah, blah... You could see his audience cringing at his words and looking at each other as if thinking, what have we gotten ourselves into here? Why they stood there and continued to let him prime them for failure is beyond me.

On the other hand, there was clearly another group of people present. I had found a colleague who was also there for the math test and we were standing pretty close to the doom-sayer. We could feel the negativity seeping into our psyches and didn't like it. We moved down the hall and found a distinctly different group of people. These people were standing around laughing, chatting, and peppering their conversation with positive and actually useful comments. Things like "Did you bring an extra pencil? Did you remember some spare calculator batteries? Ask me what the fundamental trig identities are." What a difference!

This group was a lot more fun to be with. My friend and me could feel our attitude recovering from the negativity we were exposed to earlier. How much difference it made we will never know, but one thing is for sure--we entered the exam room feeling upbeat, thinking we had a real chance; as winners rather than losers. Wouldn't you rather be a winner instead of a loser on the TExES?

You may find your self in a similar situation either while preparing for, or even right before the TExES exam practice. You can't change the way people think, but you can control who you are standing next to. Stay on the positive side and do winning things while waiting to enter the TExES exam room--don't prime your self for failure. You hear a lot about how important attitude is when preparing for a challenge. Properly setting your own test psychology starts the day you realize you're going to have to take the test. It doesn't stop until you walk out the door after the test.

Summary: The TExES is a challenging test. You need every psychological advantage possible working in your favor. Before the exam, choose to associate with colleagues who maintain a positive attitude and avoid any negativity.
