they're related. It's possible to remember many isolated facts but not be able to synthesize them into something you can use on a high-stakes exam like the Praxis 2 Mathematics test. On the other hand, knowing how and when to apply the quadratic formula isn't much good if you don't know (that is don't remember) the quadratic formula! Through many years of experience, the Teaching Solutions staff has come up with some practical recommendations for what to memorize to achieve a high score on your Praxis 2 test Mathematics: Content Knowledge (0061).

First of all, there are some important things you don't need to remember. These are the things that the Praxis 2 testing company gives you as part of the test material. Many people know that some formulas and basic mathematical information are provided in the test booklet. Unfortunately few candidates actually take the time to look at it closely and incorporate it into their test preparation plans. There's no need to memorize anything that will be provided as part of the test. You should keep a copy of the Praxis 2 Mathematics exam Selected Notations, Formulas, and Definitions with you as you study and practice for the test. Refer to it as needed and learn how to find information on it quickly. There are some cool things included, such as DeMoivre's Theorem, sum and half-angle trig identities, the sine and cosine laws, and some useful (and hard to remember) volume and surface area formulas.

You'll notice that there are some important formulas that are NOT included in this Praxis 2 Mathematics test document. Now that you know what you don't have to memorize, here's a list of things that we strongly recommend you do memorize and have ready for quick recall when you take the Praxis 2 Mathematics test: Content Knowledge (0061).

  • Heron's area formula for triangles
  • fundamental trigonometric identities
  • Pythagorean Theorem
  • formulas for the areas of triangles, quadrilaterals, and circles (also circumference)
  • basic factoring formulas (e.g. difference of two squares, etc.)
  • quadratic formula
  • binomial theorem
  • fundamental equations for lines, circles, parabolas and ellipses
  • logarithm change of base formula
  • laws of exponents
  • basic rules for integration and differentiation
  • divisibility rules for 2-10 (with the exception of the rule for divisibility by 7--it's easier just to check by dividing in most cases)
  • order of operations (does PEMDAS ring a bell?)
  • commutative, associative, and distributive properties for addition and multiplication
That's a good start. If you get all those down, you'll still have room for a few additional things of your own choosing. You have enough to worry about when preparing for the Praxis 2 test: Mathematics Content Knowledge (0061) test. Pick the right things to memorize, and be familiar with the provided formula and notation sheet. You'll save yourself some time and give yourself an edge on the day you take your Praxis 2 test mathematics.

Summary: There is no need to memorize every imaginable formula when preparing for your Praxis 2 Mathematics Content Knowledge (0061) test. You should be intimately familiar with the formulas and notes provided as part of the test. For maximum success, have a select core of additional information memorized.
